Features

  • 100 cards, every addition fact from 1 + 1 to 10 + 10
  • The fact on the front, stacked as in a column
  • The sum on the back, with the fact small in the corner for sorting
  • A thick orange frame on every front, so the cards are easy to turn the right way

  • Add within 20
  • Know the addition facts to 20 from memory
  • Use doubles and near doubles
  • Make a ten to add (9 + 5 = 10 + 4)
  • Use turnaround facts
  • Check an answer on the back

How to Use This Pack

One hundred flash cards, eight to a sheet, for the addition facts within 20: every pair of numbers from 1 to 10, from 1 + 1 to 10 + 10, with turnaround facts on cards of their own. Each front shows a fact stacked as in a column; its back shows the sum, with the fact printed small in the corner for sorting. Print the pack double-sided and flip on the long edge: each back sheet is laid out mirrored, so every card's back lands behind its front. On a printer that prints one side, choose Fronts only under Print, put the printed sheets back in the paper tray, then choose Backs only. Fronts have a thick frame and backs a thin one, so a card turned the wrong way stands out.

In the Classroom

Use part of the set at a time: the doubles one week, the facts that make a ten the next. Partners take turns showing a card and saying the sum, then turn it over to check. Keep the facts a child misses in a practice pile.

At Home

Five minutes a day goes further than an hour once a week. Start with the facts your child knows, then add two or three new ones each day.

Tips for Success

  • Doubles first: 6 + 6 = 12
  • Near doubles: 6 + 7 is one more than 6 + 6
  • Make a ten: 9 + 5 = 10 + 4
  • Turnaround facts have the same sum
  • Keep the cards a child misses in their own pile

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract to 20, working fluently within 10, with strategies like counting on, making ten, fact families and doubles plus one.
  • 2.OA.B.2 Add and subtract to 20 quickly using strategies done in the head, and by year's end instantly recall every sum of two single-digit numbers.
