Five pages of comparing numbers from 1 to 10 with words, never the > and < signs. On page 1 each number sits over a ten frame with that many dots, so students can see which is greater before they circle it. Page 2 turns it around: students draw the dots in the empty ten frames themselves, then circle the number that is less. Page 3 has the numbers alone, with close pairs like 7 and 8: circle the greater number in the top half and the number that is less in the bottom half. On page 4 students put a dot on both numbers on a number line and circle the one further along. Page 5 gives number cards to write in order from least to greatest, three or four at a time. Each page starts with a worked example.
Read each direction aloud and point to the word greater or less as you say it. Before page 1, build two numbers with cubes or counters in ten frames and ask which has more: that number is greater. For page 4, walk a toy along a floor number line and say that the numbers get greater as you go. For page 5, hand out number cards and let children line themselves up from least to greatest.
Roll two dice or pull two playing cards and ask which number is greater and which is less. Count out that many spoons or blocks to check. Write three numbers on sticky notes and have your child put them in order.
