Five pages on making 5 with five frames. On pages 1 and 2 a frame is part full of dots or animals: children draw more to fill it and write how many more make 5, as in "3 and 2 make 5". Pages 3 and 4 show full frames of two kinds of counters, filled and empty dots or two animals, and children count each kind; a small counter under each box shows which kind goes in it. Page 5 asks the first question again with + and =, in frames whose counters sit in any spaces. Each page starts with a worked example in green.
Give each child a five frame and five two-sided counters. Shake the counters, spill them, put them in the frame and say the pair together: "4 and 1 make 5." Keep a class list of every pair found until all six (0 and 5 to 5 and 0) are there. On pages 1 and 2, children can draw the missing counters before they write the number, then count the drawn ones.
Hold up five fingers, fold some down and ask how many are up and how many are down. Say the pair together: "2 and 3 make 5."
