Five pages on multiplying a one-digit number by a multiple of 10. Page 1 shows equal groups of tens rods, so 3 × 40 is 3 groups of 4 tens: 12 tens, or 120. Page 2 starts each row with a fact students know, like 3 × 4, then multiplies by 40 and by 400. Page 3 is a drill of 30 facts such as 7 × 60. Page 4 has 20 equations with a missing factor, like 6 × __ = 240. Page 5 has six word problems with room to work.
Start page 1 with real base-ten rods: build 3 groups of 4 tens, count the tens together, and trade them for the number. Page 2 makes a good class talk about why the zeros appear, in place of a rule about adding zeros.
Ask your child to say the tens out loud: 7 × 60 is 7 times 6 tens, which is 42 tens, or 420. Use bundles of 10 sticks or dimes to show a few of the problems.
