Five pages that introduce coding and decoding, a favorite topic in logical reasoning. Page 1 decodes words from a picture code where each picture stands for the first letter of its name. Page 2 reads words written in a symbol code, then writes words in the code by drawing the symbols. Page 3 uses the number code A = 1, B = 2 and so on to Z = 26, both ways. Page 4 answers three riddles written in the number code. Page 5 adds up what words are worth when each letter is worth its number, and compares two words. The first item on each page is done as an example.
Write your own name in the number code on the board and let the class decode it before page 3. Partners can then write short coded messages for each other with the symbol code from page 2. Page 5 turns the code into addition practice: ask who can find a word worth exactly 10.
Leave a coded note in a lunch box or on the fridge using the A = 1 code, and ask your child to write one back. Try finding the word in your family worth the most.
