Skills Covered

  • Find the number that makes 10 for any number 1-9
  • Count missing spaces in a ten frame
  • Subitize dot groups without counting one by one
  • Add two quantities using ten frames
  • Complete missing-addend equations
  • Move from visual models to abstract equations

How to Use This Worksheet

A scaffolded seven-page pack for the making-ten strategy. The pages step from concrete to abstract: count the empty spaces in a ten frame, answer how many more make 10, add two frames together, complete equations with dotted-dot hints, then solve bare equations using the included blank ten frame reference sheets as a helper tool.

In the Classroom

Work through the pages in order across a week of making-ten practice. The final two pages are reusable helper sheets - print one per student, slip into sheet protectors, and let students draw dots lightly with pencil or dry-erase marker while solving the equation pages, then erase and reuse.

At Home

Do one page at a time. If your child gets stuck on an equation page, hand them the blank ten frame sheet and say "draw the 4 dots - now how many empty spaces are left?" The frame turns an abstract fact into something they can see and count.

Tips for Success

  • Follow the page order - each sheet removes a little more visual support
  • Laminate the last two reference pages so they can be used all year
  • Say answers out loud as combinations: "6 and 4 make 10"
  • Generate fresh versions anytime with the Making 10: Ten Frames generator

Common Core Standards Alignment

This worksheet supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.OA.A.4 - For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number
  • K.OA.A.1 - Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, or drawings
  • 1.OA.C.6 - Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency using strategies such as making ten

Making Tens with Ten Frames

K - 1st 1 worksheet

A seven-page ten frames pack that builds the making-ten strategy step by step: count missing dots, find how many more make 10, add two frames, complete equations, and solve with reusable blank ten frame reference sheets.

What’s Included

  • 5 practice pages that step from counting dots to completing equations
  • 2 reusable blank ten frame reference sheets (portrait and giant landscape)
  • Dotted guide circles for fill-in, erase, and reuse practice
  • Standard name and date lines on every practice page
  • Clean, print-friendly black-and-white layout
