How to Use This Pack

Six Thanksgiving I Spy pages, each a busy scene with four or five kinds of pictures spread over a frame. Page 1 counts pumpkins, apples, acorns and leaves (1 to 5) and writes how many. Page 2 colors one box of a picture graph for each pie, roll, ear of corn, bowl of cranberry sauce and sunflower. Page 3 counts and writes, then circles the kind there is the most of and the kind there is the fewest of. Page 4 makes a tally mark for each picture before writing how many. Page 5 counts 6 to 10 of each kind, and page 6 reads a number and circles the picture there are that many of.

In the Classroom

Read each direction aloud and model the first count on the board: touch each picture, say the number, and cross it off so it is not counted twice. Pages 1 and 2 suit Pre-K; pages 3 to 6 stretch Kindergarten counters to 10. Small groups can share one color copy on a table and use counters on top of the pictures.

At Home

Count the pictures together and let your child cross off each one as you go. Afterward, play I Spy at the dinner table: "I spy 3 rolls. Can you find them?"

Tips for Success

  • Count one kind at a time, crossing off each picture
  • The last number you say tells how many
  • On the graph, color from the bottom up, one box for each picture
  • Tally marks go in bundles of five: four lines and one across
  • Use crayons on the black-and-white pages after counting

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.CC.A.3 Write the numerals 0 to 20 and use a numeral to show how many objects are in a group, with 0 meaning none.
  • K.CC.B.4a Count objects by saying numbers in order and matching exactly one number to each object, none skipped or counted twice.
  • K.CC.B.4b Know the final number in a count gives the total, and the total stays the same however the objects are arranged or counted.
  • K.CC.B.5 Tell how many: up to 20 objects in a line, array or circle, or 10 scattered. Also count out a requested number up to 20.
  • K.CC.C.6 Decide whether one group of up to 10 objects has more, fewer or the same as another, by matching or counting.
  • K.MD.B.3 Sort objects into named groups, count each group (up to 10), and order the groups by how many they hold.
  • 1.MD.C.4 Sort and show data in up to three groups, then answer questions about the total, each group's count, and how groups differ.
