Five Thanksgiving games for practicing addition and subtraction facts within 20, each on its own page with its rules at the top. Page 1, Race to the Pie, is a board game for 2 to 4 players: roll a die, move, and say the answer on the space; a partner checks it on the answer sheet, and the pawns (a turkey, a pilgrim hat, an acorn and a pumpkin) are cut from the bottom of the page. Page 2, Roll a Turkey, gives each of two players a turkey with feathers numbered 2 to 12: roll two dice, add, and color the feather with that sum. Page 3, Gobble Four in a Row, has two paper clip spinners (13 to 18 and 5 to 10) and a board where each answer shows up as often as it can be spun; players subtract and try for four in a row. Page 4 is a 20-card I Have, Who Has? chain for the whole class, with addition and subtraction mixed. Page 5, Feast Fact Match, is a Memory game: 10 turkey cards with facts and 10 pie cards with their answers.
Teach one game at a time to the whole class, then put it in a math center for the week before Thanksgiving. Print the boards on card stock, or slide them into sheet protectors and use dry-erase markers. Play I Have, Who Has? as a class and time it, then play again to beat the time. The answer sheets for the board game and the cards let partners check each other without a teacher.
Play Roll a Turkey or Race to the Pie with dice from a board game while the turkey roasts. Ask your child how they found an answer: "13 take away 6: I took away 3 to get to 10, then 3 more is 7." Play Feast Fact Match with older and younger cousins: the younger ones can play with the cards face up.
