How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on shapes and equal shares, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 1st grade shapes and shares the unit builds on: the sides and corners of a shape, naming a flat shape and a solid shape, square corners, telling equal shares from unequal ones, and cutting a square into halves. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who miscounts sides needs to mark each side as they count it, and one who cannot tell equal shares from unequal ones needs to fold paper shapes before the lessons on halves, thirds and fourths. Nothing on the page asks for thirds, pentagons or faces and edges yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on shapes and equal shares starts: find shapes at home and count their sides together, and fold a square of paper into two equal halves.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Keep paper squares out for a student who missed the equal shares
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.G.A.1 Draw and spot shapes with given features, like a number of angles or faces, and name triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes.
  • 2.G.A.3 Cut circles and rectangles into 2, 3 or 4 equal parts called halves, thirds or fourths; equal parts of one whole can look different.

2nd Grade Shapes and Equal Shares Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on shapes and equal shares, on the shapes and shares it builds on. Students count sides and corners, name a flat shape and a solid shape, count square corners, find the shapes cut into equal shares and cut a square into halves.
