How to Use This Pack

Ten pages, two lessons. The first five pages teach regrouping the ones: think first, see the trade with blocks and a chart, decide "new ten or not", explain the trade and show what you know. The next five add the second trade: 10 tens make a hundred, worked one place at a time, then mixed sums and mistakes to find. Each lesson has its own teacher notes and answer keys.

In the Classroom

Teach the lessons on separate days, starting each with its think-first page. Keep base-ten blocks out for both: the second lesson only works when students can see 10 tens become a flat. The teacher notes for each lesson list the misconceptions to expect and what secure work looks like.

At Home

Ask your child to say which places will trade before adding, and to show a trade with coins: ten pennies for a dime, ten dimes for a dollar.

Tips for Success

  • Ones first, then tens, then hundreds
  • Write each new unit in the place it moves to
  • Count the new ten in before trading the tens
  • Ask: is it still the same amount?
  • Estimate first, so a wrong answer stands out

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.NBT.A.1a See ten tens grouped together as one unit called a hundred.
  • 2.NBT.A.1b Know that 100, 200 and so on up to 900 mean 1 to 9 hundreds with no tens or ones.
  • 2.NBT.B.5 Add and subtract to 100 fluently with place-value strategies, properties of addition, or the link between adding and subtracting.
  • 2.NBT.B.6 Find the sum of two, three or four two-digit numbers using place value and properties of addition.
  • 2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract to 1,000 with models and place-value strategies, working hundreds, tens and ones separately and regrouping tens or hundreds as needed.
  • 2.NBT.B.9 Tell why an adding or subtracting method gives the right answer, reasoning from place value and number properties.
  • 3.NBT.A.2 Add and subtract to 1,000 fluently using place-value strategies and written methods, properties of addition, and fact-family relationships.

3-Digit Addition: Regrouping Ones and Tens

2nd – 3rd Grade

The two regrouping lessons together: first sums where the ones make a new ten, then sums where the ones and the tens both trade. Students think before they add, use blocks, charts and the column method, explain each trade and find mistakes.
