Five pages that build one idea: when the ones add to 10 or more, 10 of them become a new ten. Page 1 asks students to think before they add. Page 2 shows the trade with base-ten blocks, a place value chart and the column side by side, then guides a first try. Page 3 mixes sums that do and do not make a new ten. Page 4 asks students to explain the trade and find mistakes, and page 5 checks what they know with missing digits, a sum of their own and a story.
Build the worked example with real base-ten blocks first, and trade 10 cubes for a rod in front of the class. Ask "Is it still the same amount?" after every trade. Use page 3 as partner work: each partner decides "new ten or not" before adding, then they compare. The teacher notes give a launch, the misconceptions to expect and what to look for.
Ask your child to tell you, before adding, whether the ones will make a new ten and how they know. Coins work as blocks at home: ten pennies trade for a dime.
