Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the same kinds of question as the test
  • Shade a strip to show the same amount, and write two fractions for an area model
  • Find equivalent fractions on two number lines and with a fraction wall
  • Write whole numbers as fractions
  • Compare fractions with the same denominator or the same numerator
  • Compare in stories, and decide if a comparison of two pans is fair
  • The last question (closest to 0, 1/2 or 1) is for Virginia
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Equivalent fractions with fraction strips and area models
  • Equivalent fractions on two number lines
  • Missing numerators and denominators, with a fraction wall
  • Whole numbers as fractions
  • Compare fractions with the same denominator
  • Compare fractions with the same numerator
  • Compare fractions in stories: the wholes must be the same size
  • Benchmark fractions: closest to 0, 1/2 or 1

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on equivalent and comparing fractions, to do together the day before the test. Its 11 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other fractions. Question 11 (benchmark fractions) is the Virginia lesson, as on the test. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. In question 10 the two pans are the same size, so Lee is right; ask what would change if one pan were bigger. Leave out question 11 if your class does not learn benchmark fractions. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Fold two paper strips the same length, one into fourths and one into eighths, and ask your child to show you that 2/8 is the same as 1/4.

Tips for Success

  • Line up fraction strips at the left edge before comparing them
  • Same denominator: more parts of the same size is more
  • Same numerator: the same number of bigger parts is more, so 2/3 > 2/8
  • Ask "Are the wholes the same size?" before comparing in a story
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.NF.A.2a Mark 1/b on a number line by splitting the space from 0 to 1 into b equal parts; the first part ends at 1/b.
  • 3.NF.A.2b Place a/b on a number line by counting a jumps of size 1/b from 0; where the jumps end is a/b.
  • 3.NF.A.3a Know that two fractions are equal when they cover the same amount of a whole or land at the same spot on a number line.
  • 3.NF.A.3b Find and make simple equal fractions, such as 3/6 = 1/2, and use a picture or model to show why they match.
  • 3.NF.A.3c Show a whole number in fraction form and notice when a fraction names a whole number, such as 2 = 2/1 or 8/4 = 2.
  • 3.NF.A.3d Compare fractions of the same whole that have equal numerators or equal denominators, thinking about part size; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 4.NF.A.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators using common denominators or numerators, or a benchmark like 1/2; record with >, = or < and explain.

3rd Grade Equivalent and Comparing Fractions Unit Review

A review of the unit on equivalent and comparing fractions, to go over together the day before the test. Students find equal fractions with strips, area models and number lines, write whole numbers as fractions, and compare fractions on their own and in stories.
