How to Use This Pack

The unit test on adding and subtracting decimals. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 12 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Every question is part of the Common Core unit, in lesson order: hundred grids, lining up the decimal points, estimating, money and story problems. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Several questions have two or more parts: give the point when every part is right, or score them by the part if you like. The story problems have a box for the work; the key shows one way to solve each. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach. No question asks a problem from the unit's exit tickets or from the practice sheets.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child to estimate a total at the store by rounding each price to the nearest dollar, then to find the exact total and the change.

Tips for Success

  • Line up the decimal points first, then the digits
  • Write zeros in empty places before subtracting from a whole number
  • Estimate before working a problem, then check the answer against the estimate
  • Ask students to name the unit in every story answer
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 5.NBT.A.4 Round decimals to any place, such as the nearest whole number, tenth or hundredth, by thinking about place value.
  • 5.NBT.B.7 Do all four operations with decimals to hundredths using models, drawings and place value, and explain how each strategy matches a written method.
  • 5.MD.A.1 Change measurements between bigger and smaller units of one system, such as 250 cm to 2.5 m, and use this in multi-step real-life problems.
