How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 4th grade skills the unit builds on: the factors of a number, equal fractions, the multiples two numbers share, adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator, a mixed number subtraction that trades 1 whole, and whether a fraction is more or less than one half. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed. A student who misses the factors or the common multiple will need extra time on the greatest common factor and the least common denominator (lessons 7.2 and 7.3). One who misses the equal fractions needs that before renaming. The trade and the one half question lead into subtracting mixed numbers and estimating (lessons 7.7 and 7.8).

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: ask for the first few multiples of 3 and of 4, and the first number on both lists.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Review factors and multiples with students who missed them
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.OA.B.4 For numbers 1 to 100, list factor pairs, spot multiples of one-digit numbers, and sort numbers into prime and composite.
  • 4.NF.B.3a Understand adding and subtracting fractions as joining and taking away parts of the same whole.
  • 4.NF.B.3c Add and subtract mixed numbers with the same denominator, for example by changing them to fractions or by using properties of operations.
  • 4.NF.B.3d Solve story problems that add or subtract fractions of the same whole with like denominators, using fraction models and equations.
  • 4.MD.B.4 Make a line plot of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths, and use it to solve problems that add and subtract fractions.
  • 5.NF.A.1 Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators by rewriting them as equivalent fractions with a common denominator.
  • 5.NF.A.2 Solve story problems that add or subtract fractions of one whole, unlike denominators included, and check that answers make sense with benchmark fractions and estimating.
  • 5.NF.B.5b Explain why multiplying by a fraction above 1 makes a number bigger and below 1 makes it smaller; see equivalent fractions as multiplying by 1.

5th Grade Adding and Subtracting Fractions Pre-Check

5th Grade

A check to give before the unit on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, on the skills it builds on. Students list factors and multiples, write equal fractions, add and subtract with the same denominator and compare fractions with one half.
