Features

  • Forms A and B ask the same questions with different numbers
  • Area and perimeter of rectangles with fraction and decimal sides
  • Shapes made of two rectangles: split one for its area, find another's missing side and its perimeter
  • A right triangle as half a rectangle, on a grid and with its sides labeled
  • Area of a parallelogram, any triangle and a trapezoid split into a rectangle and a triangle
  • A story that asks for a perimeter and an area, each with its units
  • Estimate the perimeter of a polygon with sides in tenths and of a circle on a grid
  • Every question is for the states that teach these lessons in 5th grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Rectangles with fraction and decimal sides
  • Shapes made of rectangles
  • Area of right triangles
  • Area of parallelograms and triangles
  • Trapezoids and stories in the right units
  • Estimating perimeters

How to Use This Pack

The unit test on the area and perimeter of polygons. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 12 questions, one point each, two for each lesson, and a Score line on its first page. Every lesson in this unit is one some states teach in 5th grade (rectangles with fraction and decimal sides, shapes made of rectangles, triangles, parallelograms and trapezoids, estimating perimeters), so give the questions for the lessons your class learns. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Questions 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 10 have two parts (an area and a perimeter; a missing side and the perimeter; the dashed rectangle and the triangle; an area and its units; a perimeter and an area with their units): give the point when every part is right, or score them by the part if you like. Questions 1 to 6 are on the first page, 7 to 12 on the second, two for each lesson in order, so you can give the questions for the lessons you taught and score out of what you give. No question asks a problem from the unit's exit tickets or the practice sheets. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child which length is the height of a triangle drawn on paper, and why a slanted side is not.

Tips for Success

  • Ask "covering or going around?" before each answer: square units or units
  • Have students say which two lengths go in the formula before they multiply
  • Point out that a slanted side is not the height
  • Let students split shapes in more than one way
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.MD.A.3 Solve real and math problems with rectangle area and perimeter formulas, such as finding an unknown side from the area and the other side.
  • 5.NF.B.4a Multiply a whole number or fraction by a fraction, seeing (3/4) × 2 as 3 of the 4 equal parts of 2, using models.
  • 5.NF.B.4b Tile a rectangle with fraction side lengths using squares whose sides are unit fractions, and see the area equals the two sides multiplied.
  • 5.NF.B.5a Without multiplying, tell how the size of a product compares to one factor by looking at the size of the other factor.
  • 5.NF.B.5b Explain why multiplying by a fraction above 1 makes a number bigger and below 1 makes it smaller; see equivalent fractions as multiplying by 1.
  • 5.NF.B.6 Solve real-life problems that multiply fractions and mixed numbers, using fraction models or equations.

5th Grade Area and Perimeter Test

5th Grade

The unit test on the area and perimeter of polygons in two forms, from rectangles with fraction sides to triangles, trapezoids and estimates. Students find area and perimeter with fraction and decimal sides, measure shapes made of rectangles, use the area formulas for triangles, parallelograms and trapezoids, and estimate perimeters.
