One page to give on the first day of the unit on multiplying fractions, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 4th grade skills the unit builds on: fractions greater than 1 as mixed numbers and back, a whole number times a fraction, an equal fraction found by dividing, the area of a rectangle with whole-number sides, and between which two whole numbers a product falls. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed. A student who cannot write 11/4 as a mixed number will need it on the first day, when 11 shared by 4 is 11/4 = 2 3/4 (lesson 8.1). One who misses the whole number times a fraction needs that before a fraction of a whole number (lesson 8.2). The area question leads into areas with fraction sides (lesson 8.5), and the mixed numbers as fractions into multiplying them (lesson 8.6).
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: ask how many fourths are in 2 3/4.

A check to give before the unit on multiplying fractions, on the skills it builds on. Students rename fractions and mixed numbers, multiply a whole number by a fraction, find the area of a rectangle and tell between which whole numbers a product falls.
