How to Use This Pack

Eight exit tickets, one for each lesson of the 5th grade unit on multiplying fractions, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two short questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. On tickets 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 and 8.8 the keys show other right answers too (a mixed number or a fraction greater than 1; the factors in either order; any way of shading that shows the product). Ticket 8.7 asks students not to multiply: listen for "times a fraction less than 1 makes it smaller". No ticket asks a problem from the practice sheets the lesson plans use.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Ask your child whether 3/4 of 20 is more or less than 20 before working it out, then to find it.

Tips for Success

  • A fraction is a division: 3 shared by 4 is 3/4 each
  • To find 3/5 of 20, cut 20 into 5 equal parts and take 3
  • Multiply the numerators and the denominators, then simplify
  • Write mixed numbers as fractions greater than 1 before multiplying
  • Times a number less than 1 makes it smaller; more than 1 makes it bigger

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 5.NF.B.3 Understand a fraction as division, such as 2/5 = 2 ÷ 5, and solve sharing story problems with fraction or mixed-number answers.
  • 5.NF.B.4a Multiply a whole number or fraction by a fraction, seeing (3/4) × 2 as 3 of the 4 equal parts of 2, using models.
  • 5.NF.B.4b Tile a rectangle with fraction side lengths using squares whose sides are unit fractions, and see the area equals the two sides multiplied.
  • 5.NF.B.5a Without multiplying, tell how the size of a product compares to one factor by looking at the size of the other factor.
  • 5.NF.B.5b Explain why multiplying by a fraction above 1 makes a number bigger and below 1 makes it smaller; see equivalent fractions as multiplying by 1.
  • 5.NF.B.6 Solve real-life problems that multiply fractions and mixed numbers, using fraction models or equations.

5th Grade Multiplying Fractions Exit Tickets

5th Grade

Exit tickets for every lesson of a unit on multiplying fractions, from a fraction as a division to mixed numbers and scaling. Students write sharing problems as divisions, multiply on tape diagrams and area models, find areas with fraction sides, decide whether a product is more or less and solve story problems, one quick ticket at the end of each lesson.
