How to Use This Pack

Eight lesson plans, one for each lesson of a 5th grade unit on multiplying fractions, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the eight lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, maker and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. Paper shared out and folded carries the first lessons: circles cut to share, tape diagrams, and squares folded one way and then the other, so students see the overlap that is the product before they use the rule. The exit tickets, pre-check, review and unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons, and the plans use other numbers than they do.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson with paper to fold, a recipe and measuring cups, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Say "of" as "times": 2/3 of 12 is 2/3 × 12
  • Ask "Is the product more or less than what you started with?" before every product
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 5.NF.B.3 Understand a fraction as division, such as 2/5 = 2 ÷ 5, and solve sharing story problems with fraction or mixed-number answers.
  • 5.NF.B.4a Multiply a whole number or fraction by a fraction, seeing (3/4) × 2 as 3 of the 4 equal parts of 2, using models.
  • 5.NF.B.4b Tile a rectangle with fraction side lengths using squares whose sides are unit fractions, and see the area equals the two sides multiplied.
  • 5.NF.B.5a Without multiplying, tell how the size of a product compares to one factor by looking at the size of the other factor.
  • 5.NF.B.5b Explain why multiplying by a fraction above 1 makes a number bigger and below 1 makes it smaller; see equivalent fractions as multiplying by 1.
  • 5.NF.B.6 Solve real-life problems that multiply fractions and mixed numbers, using fraction models or equations.
