Five pages on multiplying a fraction by a whole number. Page 1 shows fractions on fraction strips as copies of a unit fraction (5/4 is 5 fourths, so 5/4 = 5 × 1/4), then goes both ways: 7/3 = 7 × 1/3 and 5 × 1/6 = 5/6. Page 2 multiplies a whole number by a unit fraction with jumps on number lines (5 jumps of 1/3 land on 5/3), then finds how many unit fractions make 1 or 2. Page 3 multiplies by any fraction: 3 × 2/5 is 3 strips with 2 fifths shaded, so it is 6 × 1/5 = 6/5, then writes products as mixed numbers, with the whole number first or second. Page 4 names the two whole numbers a product falls between, then decides without multiplying whether a product is more than, less than, or equal to the whole number, and why. Page 5 has story problems about recipes, laps, ribbon, and plants: write an equation, then solve.
Before page 1, have students count unit fractions out loud: "one fourth, two fourths, three fourths, four fourths, five fourths." On page 2, ask where 6 jumps of 1/3 will land before anyone draws them. For page 4, take a vote before multiplying: is 6 × 3/4 more or less than 6?
Cook with your child: if one batch needs 3/4 cup of milk, how much do 3 batches need? Count it out with a 1/4 cup measure, one scoop at a time.

A 5-page fractions pack for 4th grade. See a fraction as copies of a unit fraction on fraction strips (5/4 = 5 × 1/4), multiply a whole number by a unit fraction with jumps on number lines, and find how many unit fractions make 1 or 2. Multiply a whole number by any fraction, with the whole number first or second, write the product as a mixed number, name the two whole numbers it falls between, tell whether it is more or less than the whole number, and solve story problems with an equation. Every page comes in color and in black and white. Answer keys included.
