How to Use This Pack

The unit test on multiplying a fraction by a whole number. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 8 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Questions 1 to 7 are the Common Core part of the unit; question 8 (a fraction as sharing) is for South Carolina and Virginia, which teach it in 4th grade. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Questions 1 to 3 build a product from copies of a unit fraction, first one at a time, then on a number line and on strips. Question 5 puts the fraction first in one of its products, as Florida asks: the product is the same either way. The story problems ask for an equation and a mixed number answer; the key gives the fraction too. Question 8, at the bottom of the second page, is the state lesson on sharing: leave it out if your class does not learn it and score out of 7.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child how much 4 servings of 2/3 cup is, and to show it as 8 copies of 1/3.

Tips for Success

  • A whole number times a fraction is that many copies: 3 × 2/5 is 6 fifths
  • Write the copies over the denominator, then take out the wholes
  • The order does not matter: 3/4 × 9 is the same as 9 × 3/4
  • In a story, ask "how many groups, and how much in each?"
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NF.B.3b Break a fraction apart into same-denominator fractions in different ways, like 5/6 = 2/6 + 3/6 = 1/6 + 4/6, and write the equations.
  • 4.NF.B.4a See a fraction a/b as a copies of 1/b, such as 7/3 = 7 × (1/3), and show it with a fraction model.
  • 4.NF.B.4b Find a whole number times a fraction by counting unit fractions: 4 × (2/3) is 8 copies of 1/3, which is 8/3.
  • 4.NF.B.4c Solve story problems with a whole number times a fraction, using models and equations, and name the two whole numbers the answer falls between.
  • 5.NF.B.3 Understand a fraction as division, such as 2/5 = 2 ÷ 5, and solve sharing story problems with fraction or mixed-number answers.
