How to Use This Pack

Six exit tickets, one for each lesson of the 4th grade unit on multiplying a fraction by a whole number, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two short questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. Ticket 9.4 puts the fraction first in one product (3/8 × 9), as Florida asks: listen for students who say the order does not matter. Ticket 9.6 (a fraction as sharing) is for South Carolina and Virginia; skip it if your class does not learn it. The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Ask your child how much milk 11 muffins need if each needs 3/8 cup, and which two whole numbers the answer is between.

Tips for Success

  • A whole number times a fraction is that many copies of the fraction
  • Write the copies over the denominator, then take out the wholes
  • The order does not matter: 3/8 × 9 is the same as 9 × 3/8
  • In a story, ask "how many groups, and how much in each?"
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NF.B.3b Break a fraction apart into same-denominator fractions in different ways, like 5/6 = 2/6 + 3/6 = 1/6 + 4/6, and write the equations.
  • 4.NF.B.4a See a fraction a/b as a copies of 1/b, such as 7/3 = 7 × (1/3), and show it with a fraction model.
  • 4.NF.B.4b Find a whole number times a fraction by counting unit fractions: 4 × (2/3) is 8 copies of 1/3, which is 8/3.
  • 4.NF.B.4c Solve story problems with a whole number times a fraction, using models and equations, and name the two whole numbers the answer falls between.
  • 5.NF.B.3 Understand a fraction as division, such as 2/5 = 2 ÷ 5, and solve sharing story problems with fraction or mixed-number answers.
