Each page has an animal riddle and a row of letter boxes with a problem under each one. Students solve the problem, find the answer in the code box, and write that letter in the box. When every box is filled, the letters spell the answer to the riddle. Page 1 is addition, page 2 subtraction, page 3 both, page 4 multiplication, and page 5 division.
Read the riddle aloud and let students guess before they solve. A wrong letter makes a word that does not look right, so students can find and fix their own mistakes.
Kids love telling the joke afterward. When the page is done, have your child read the riddle and its answer to someone else at home.
