Five pages of counting to 5, each with one empty plate, nest, basket or frame, so zero comes up on every page. On page 1 children count the apples, eggs, oranges and pears and write how many: the empty basket is 0. Page 2 matches six groups to the numbers 0 to 5 with lines. On page 3 children read a number and draw that many dots on the plate beside it. Page 4 has five frames with 0 to 5 dots, and page 5 traces each number from 0 to 5 three times and draws that many dots.
Start with real plates and a few counters: put 3 on a plate, take them off one at a time, and count down to zero. Ask "How many are on the plate now?" until children say "zero" or "none". On page 3, a child who draws nothing on the 0 plate has it right: say so out loud. Five frames on page 4 show 0 as a frame with no dots.
Count things onto a plate at snack time: 3 crackers, then 2, then none. Ask how many are left when the plate is empty, and write the number together.

Counting groups of 0 to 5 things on plates, in nests and in baskets, where an empty one shows that zero means none. Children write how many, match groups to numbers, draw that many dots, read five frames and trace the numbers 0 to 5.
