How to Use This Pack

Five pages of counting with animals. Page 1 has five rows of 1 to 5 animals, each with three numbers to circle from. Page 2 counts 6 to 10 frogs, penguins, cats, butterflies and bears set out in rows of five, the way a ten frame fills. On page 3 students count six groups and write each number in a box. Page 4 turns it around: circle 3 of the 6 frogs, 5 of the 8 penguins and so on. Page 5 is a busy scene of owls, frogs, lions and turtles to count kind by kind.

In the Classroom

Model touching each animal as you count it out loud, then let students try with a finger before circling. On page 4, count out loud and draw the circle around the animals as you go: stop when you reach the number. Page 5 works well with crayons: mark each animal with a dot of color as it is counted.

At Home

Count animals in a picture book or out the window together. Ask your child to give you 4 toy animals, then 7, and count them back with you.

Tips for Success

  • Touch each animal once as you count it
  • The last number you say tells how many
  • Rows of five make bigger numbers easier to count
  • On page 5, cross off or dot each animal after you count it

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.CC.A.3 Write the numerals 0 to 20 and use a numeral to show how many objects are in a group, with 0 meaning none.
  • K.CC.B.4a Count objects by saying numbers in order and matching exactly one number to each object, none skipped or counted twice.
  • K.CC.B.4b Know the final number in a count gives the total, and the total stays the same however the objects are arranged or counted.
  • K.CC.B.5 Tell how many: up to 20 objects in a line, array or circle, or 10 scattered. Also count out a requested number up to 20.
