How to Use This Pack

Eight lesson plans, one for each lesson of a Kindergarten unit on comparing to 10, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the eight lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers and tools for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 35 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching on the rug, 5 minutes together, 10 minutes of practice and an exit ticket you read aloud. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. Lessons 4.4 (make a group with more, fewer or the same), 4.7 (put numbers in order) and 4.8 (first to tenth) are for the states that teach them in Kindergarten.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson with toys or snacks to compare, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while children work
  • Match and count real things first, then pictures, then numbers
  • Say greater than, less than and equal to in words before writing the signs
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.CC.C.6 Decide whether one group of up to 10 objects has more, fewer or the same as another, by matching or counting.
  • K.CC.C.7 Tell which of two written numerals from 1 to 10 is greater or less.

Kindergarten Compare to 10 Lesson Plans

Lesson plans for every lesson of a Kindergarten unit on comparing to 10, one page a lesson, with a unit overview that lays the unit out day by day. Each plan has the goal and its "I can" line, what to get ready, the words to use, a 35 minute lesson in five steps (warm up, teach with words to say, try it together, practice, an exit ticket read aloud), questions to ask, the mistakes children make and what to do about them, and ideas for children who need help or are ready for more. Each one ends with the Animal Math worksheets, worksheet makers and tools for that lesson. Lessons: more and fewer by matching, count to compare, the same number, which number is greater, and greater than, less than and equal to, with making a group with more, fewer or the same, putting numbers in order and first to tenth for the states that teach them.
