How to Use This Pack

Ten lesson plans, one for each lesson of a Kindergarten unit on flat and solid shapes, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the ten lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers, tools and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 35 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching on the rug, 5 minutes together, 10 minutes of practice and an exit ticket you read aloud. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. Lesson 5.8 (the flat faces of solid shapes) is for the states that teach it in Kindergarten.

At Home

Teaching at home? Go on a shape hunt around the house with the "Words to use", and use the warm up and the "Try it together" step with blocks, balls, cans and paper shapes. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while children work
  • Hold real shapes first, then paper shapes, then pictures
  • Turn shapes often: a turned square is still a square
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.G.A.1 Use shape names for everyday objects, and tell where things are with position words like over, under, next to and behind.
  • K.G.A.2 Name shapes correctly even when they are turned, tilted, bigger or smaller.
  • K.G.A.3 Tell whether a shape is flat (two-dimensional) or solid (three-dimensional).
  • K.G.B.4 Compare flat and solid shapes of any size or position, using everyday words for their sides, corners and other features.

Kindergarten Flat and Solid Shapes Lesson Plans

Lesson plans for every lesson of a Kindergarten unit on flat and solid shapes, one page a lesson, with a unit overview that lays the unit out day by day. Each plan has the goal and its "I can" line, what to get ready, the words to use, a 35 minute lesson in five steps (warm up, teach with words to say, try it together, practice, an exit ticket read aloud), questions to ask, the mistakes children make and what to do about them, and ideas for children who need help or are ready for more. Each one ends with the Animal Math worksheets, worksheet makers, tools and quiz for that lesson. Lessons: circles and triangles, squares and rectangles, hexagons and turned shapes, flat shapes around us, closed shapes with straight sides, solid shapes, flat or solid, and position words (above, under, beside, in front of, behind, inside, outside, between), with the flat faces of solid shapes for the states that teach it.
