Skills Covered

  • Name cubes, spheres, cones, and cylinders
  • Name rectangular prisms and pyramids
  • Find solid shapes in everyday things
  • Count the solids in a picture
  • Name the flat shapes on the faces of solids
  • Tell which shapes roll and which stack

How to Use This Pack

Five pages about solid shapes. Page 1 matches six solids to their names. Page 2 shows a shape and three everyday things, and students circle the one with that shape. Page 3 is a castle built from blocks, with a table for how many cubes, rectangular prisms, cylinders, cones, pyramids, and spheres it uses. Page 4 shades one face of a solid, and students circle its flat shape: circle, square, rectangle, or triangle. Page 5 asks whether each solid can roll and whether it can stack.

In the Classroom

Pass around real blocks, balls, cans, and boxes before page 1 and name each shape together. Before page 5, let students test it: roll each solid down a book and try to stack two of the same. For page 4, press a block into play dough or trace around it to see the flat shape of a face.

At Home

Go on a shape hunt in the kitchen: a can is a cylinder, a cereal box is a rectangular prism, an orange is a sphere. Build a tower from toy blocks and count each kind of shape in it, like the castle on page 3.

Tips for Success

  • Solids are not flat: you can hold them in your hand
  • Dashed lines show the edges hiding at the back
  • A face is a flat side of a solid
  • Shapes with a curved side can roll; shapes with flat tops and bottoms can stack

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.G.A.1 Use shape names for everyday objects, and tell where things are with position words like over, under, next to and behind.
  • K.G.A.2 Name shapes correctly even when they are turned, tilted, bigger or smaller.
  • K.G.A.3 Tell whether a shape is flat (two-dimensional) or solid (three-dimensional).
  • K.G.B.4 Compare flat and solid shapes of any size or position, using everyday words for their sides, corners and other features.
  • 1.G.A.1 Separate the features that define a shape (three sides) from ones that do not (color, size, turn), and build or draw shapes with them.
