One page to give before the first lesson of the unit on building and comparing shapes, to see what children already know. Read each of its six questions aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the sun. How many sides and corners?" Children count the sides and corners of a rectangle, say whether a cylinder rolls, stacks or both, find the shape six sticks can make, count the small squares that fill a big square, draw a square on the dots and count the blocks in a build. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check to a small group at a table before the first lesson, reading one question at a time and waiting until everyone is done. Question 6 (count the blocks in a build) is taught in Kindergarten in Oklahoma: leave it out and score out of 5 if your class does not learn it. On question 5 any square drawn on the dots is right, as long as its sides are straight and meet at the corners. Then sort the children by what they missed: a child who loses count of sides needs to touch each side and corner of real shapes in the first lessons. A low score at the start is no surprise; it shows where to begin.
Use it to see what your child knows before the unit on shapes starts. Read each question aloud, and let your child build the shapes with sticks, straws or blocks before answering.
