Skills Covered

  • Name cubes, prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones and spheres
  • Count the faces, edges and vertices of a 3D shape
  • Name the flat shapes of a 3D shape's faces
  • Sort 3D shapes with flat faces from shapes with a curved surface
  • Tell which 3D shapes can roll and which can stack
  • Solve riddles about faces and vertices

How to Use This Pack

Five pages on solid shapes. Page 1 names six 3D shapes from drawings, the cube worked first, and four everyday things that look like them, with a word bank. Page 2 starts with a labeled cube (face, edge, vertex), then students count the faces, edges and vertices of a rectangular prism, a pyramid and a triangular prism, and sort eight lettered shapes into only flat faces and a curved surface. On page 3 students circle the shape of every flat face of a solid (a pyramid has squares and triangles) and count its flat faces. Page 4 compares two shapes, such as which has more faces or which has no vertices, then asks of six shapes whether each can roll and whether it can stack. Page 5 is six riddles, each with exactly one shape that fits.

In the Classroom

Pass around wooden or plastic solids, or boxes, cans and balls from home. Have students put a sticker on each vertex and run a finger along each edge as they count, then stamp each face in paint to see its flat shape before page 3. Test page 4 for real: roll each shape down a ramp of books, then try stacking it.

At Home

Hunt for 3D shapes in the kitchen: a cereal box, a soup can, an orange, an ice cream cone. Count the faces of a box together and trace one on paper. Ask which things could roll off the table and which could stack in a tower.

Tips for Success

  • A face is a flat side; a curved surface is not a face
  • An edge is where two faces meet, and a vertex is a corner where edges meet
  • Mark each vertex as you count it so none is counted twice
  • Every face of a cube is a square
  • A shape stacks when it has a flat top and a flat bottom; it rolls when it has a curved surface

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.G.A.1 Draw and spot shapes with given features, like a number of angles or faces, and name triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes.

3D Shapes: Faces, Edges and Vertices

2nd Grade

A 5-page 2nd grade pack on solid shapes. Name cubes, rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones and spheres from drawings and from everyday things such as a cereal box, a can, a globe and a party hat. Count the faces, edges and vertices of a cube, a rectangular prism, a pyramid and a triangular prism, sort shapes with only flat faces from shapes with a curved surface, and circle the shape of every flat face. Compare two shapes (which has more faces, fewer edges or no vertices), decide which shapes can roll and which can stack, and solve 3D shape riddles. Every page comes in color and in black and white. Answer keys included.
