  • The goal and its "I can" line, what to get ready and the words to use
  • A 45 minute lesson in five steps (warm up, teach with words to say, try it together, practice, exit ticket)
  • Questions to ask, and the mistakes students make and what to do about them
  • Ideas for students who need help or are ready for more
  • Each plan ends with the Animal Math worksheets, worksheet makers, tools and quiz for that lesson
  • Lessons: perimeter, a missing side, the same perimeter with different areas, area or perimeter, and describing, sorting and drawing quadrilaterals
  • Lessons 13.8 to 13.11 (polygons, lines, rays and angles, lines of symmetry, solid figures and unit cubes) are for the states that teach them in 3rd grade

3rd Grade Math CurriculumUnit 13

These are the lesson plans for Unit 13 of 14 in the 3rd Grade Math Curriculum: 125 lessons in teaching order, week by week, each with a lesson plan and an exit ticket.

Also for this unit: exit tickets, pre-check, unit review and test. See the whole year

Resources for Each Lesson

Everything each lesson plan points to, with links. Sheet numbers count worksheets: a color pack prints each sheet again in black and white.

13.1 Perimeter: the distance around

13.2 Find a missing side

13.3 Same perimeter, different area

13.4 Area or perimeter?

13.5 Quadrilaterals: angles and parallel sides

How to Use This Pack

Eleven lesson plans, one for each lesson of a 3rd grade unit on perimeter and shapes, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the eleven lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers, tools and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. Lessons 13.8 to 13.11 are taught in 3rd grade in some states only: polygons to the octagon (Virginia), lines, rays and angles (Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Oklahoma, South Carolina), lines of symmetry (Florida, Georgia) and solid figures and unit cubes (Oklahoma, Texas); skip the ones your class does not learn.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. Grid paper, a ruler, the corner of an index card and paper shapes to fold are all you need. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Keep grid paper and square tiles out for every perimeter lesson
  • Give every student an index card to check right angles
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.G.A.1 Draw and spot shapes with given features, like a number of angles or faces, and name triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes.
  • 3.MD.C.7a Tile a rectangle with whole-number sides and show that the number of tiles matches multiplying its length by its width.
  • 3.MD.C.7b Multiply length by width to get the area of whole-number rectangles in story and math problems, and picture products as rectangles.
  • 3.MD.C.7c Use tiles or area models to show that splitting a rectangle's side into two parts splits its area into two products (the distributive property).
  • 3.MD.D.8 Solve perimeter problems for polygons: add side lengths, find a missing side, and compare rectangles with equal perimeters but different areas, or the reverse.
  • 3.G.A.1 See that shapes like rhombuses, rectangles and squares share features, such as four sides, that make them all quadrilaterals; draw quadrilaterals outside those groups.
  • 4.G.A.1 Draw and find points, lines, line segments, rays, right, acute and obtuse angles, and parallel and perpendicular lines, including in flat shapes.
  • 4.G.A.2 Sort flat shapes by whether they have parallel or perpendicular lines or angles of a certain size, and recognize right triangles as a group.
  • 4.G.A.3 Find a line of symmetry, a fold line that makes two matching parts; pick out shapes that have one and draw their lines of symmetry.
