Five pages that build the words of geometry one step at a time. Each of the first three pages starts with a word bank that shows a small picture of every word. Page 1 names points, lines, line segments, and rays from their dots and arrows. Page 2 sorts pairs of lines as parallel, perpendicular, or intersecting. Page 3 names right, acute, obtuse, and straight angles, turned every which way. Page 4 counts the right angles in six shapes, and the pairs of parallel sides in a trapezoid and a parallelogram. Page 5 has students draw a ray, a line segment, parallel and perpendicular lines, and an acute and an obtuse angle on dot paper.
Before page 1, stretch a piece of string across the room: hold both ends for a line segment, then pretend one end runs on forever for a ray. Hand out index cards before pages 3 and 4 so every student has a square corner to test angles with. Page 5 makes a good partner check: trade papers and name what your partner drew.
Go on a right-angle hunt with a sheet of paper: corners of books, windows, and doors. Look for parallel lines on a ladder or a road, and for acute and obtuse angles in a pair of open scissors.
