How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on shapes and perimeter, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: adding several numbers, area by counting squares and by multiplying, and the 2nd grade shape names by sides and angles. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who misses the adding needs it before perimeter, which adds the sides; one who misses the area questions needs the area unit again before comparing area and perimeter; and one who cannot yet find the quadrilaterals needs shapes to sort by their sides before rhombuses, rectangles and squares. Nothing on the page asks for perimeter yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: count the sides and corners of shapes around the house, and add up the lengths of a table's sides with a tape measure.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Keep dot paper out for a student who missed the shape questions
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.NBT.B.6 Find the sum of two, three or four two-digit numbers using place value and properties of addition.
  • 3.MD.C.5a Know that a square with 1-unit sides has an area of one square unit and can be used to measure area.
  • 3.MD.C.5b Know that a flat shape exactly covered by some number of unit squares, with no spaces or overlapping, has that many square units of area.
  • 3.MD.C.6 Find an area by counting how many unit squares cover it, in square centimeters, meters, inches, feet or made-up units.
  • 3.MD.C.7a Tile a rectangle with whole-number sides and show that the number of tiles matches multiplying its length by its width.
  • 3.MD.C.7b Multiply length by width to get the area of whole-number rectangles in story and math problems, and picture products as rectangles.
  • 3.MD.C.7c Use tiles or area models to show that splitting a rectangle's side into two parts splits its area into two products (the distributive property).
  • 3.G.A.1 See that shapes like rhombuses, rectangles and squares share features, such as four sides, that make them all quadrilaterals; draw quadrilaterals outside those groups.

3rd Grade Shapes and Perimeter Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on shapes and perimeter, on what it builds on. Students add several numbers, find areas by counting squares and by multiplying, count the sides and angles of a shape, circle quadrilaterals and draw a shape from a clue.
