Features

  • The goal and its "I can" line, what to get ready and the words to use
  • A 45 minute lesson in five steps (warm up, teach with words to say, try it together, practice, exit ticket)
  • Questions to ask, and the mistakes students make and what to do about them
  • Ideas for students who need help or are ready for more
  • Each plan ends with the Animal Math worksheets, worksheet makers, tools and quiz for that lesson
  • Lessons: sides and angles of flat shapes, drawing shapes from clues, faces, edges and vertices, halves, thirds and fourths, and equal shares that are different shapes
  • Lessons 13.4 and 13.7 to 13.11 (right angles, sixths and eighths, comparing unit fractions, lines of symmetry, perimeter and area) are for the states that teach them in 2nd grade

2nd Grade Math CurriculumUnit 13

These are the lesson plans for Unit 13 of 13 in the 2nd Grade Math Curriculum: 128 lessons in teaching order, week by week, each with a lesson plan and an exit ticket.

Also for this unit: this unit’s exit tickets and this unit’s test. See the whole year

Resources for Each Lesson

Everything each lesson plan points to, with links. Sheet numbers count worksheets: a color pack prints each sheet again in black and white.

13.1 Flat shapes: sides and angles

13.2 Draw shapes from clues

13.3 Solid shapes: faces, edges and vertices

13.4 Right angles, smaller and larger ★

13.5 Halves, thirds and fourths

13.6 Same size, different shapes

13.7 Sixths and eighths ★

13.8 Compare unit fractions ★

13.9 Lines of symmetry ★

13.10 Perimeter: the distance around ★

13.11 Area: cover with squares ★

★ Taught in 2nd grade in some states.

Skills Covered

  • Count the sides and angles of triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons and hexagons
  • Draw a shape from a clue and name it
  • Count the faces, edges and vertices of a solid
  • Halves, thirds and fourths; equal shares can be different shapes
  • Right angles, and angles smaller or larger than one
  • Sixths and eighths; compare and order unit fractions
  • Lines of symmetry
  • Perimeter, and area from unit squares

How to Use This Pack

Eleven lesson plans, one for each lesson of a unit on shapes and equal shares, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the eleven lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers, tools and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. Lessons 13.4 and 13.7 to 13.11 are taught in 2nd grade in some states only (right angles, sixths and eighths, comparing unit fractions, symmetry, perimeter and area): teach the ones your class learns and skip the rest.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. Shapes are all around the house: count the faces of a cereal box, fold a napkin into thirds, or cut a sandwich in half two different ways.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Give every student an index card early on: its corner checks square corners all unit
  • Fold and cut paper before pictures: stacked pieces show equal shares best
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.G.A.1 Draw and spot shapes with given features, like a number of angles or faces, and name triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes.
  • 2.G.A.3 Cut circles and rectangles into 2, 3 or 4 equal parts called halves, thirds or fourths; equal parts of one whole can look different.
  • 3.NF.A.1 Know 1/b is one of b equal parts of a whole, and a/b is a of those parts (denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8).
  • 3.NF.A.3d Compare fractions of the same whole that have equal numerators or equal denominators, thinking about part size; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 3.MD.C.5a Know that a square with 1-unit sides has an area of one square unit and can be used to measure area.
  • 3.MD.C.5b Know that a flat shape exactly covered by some number of unit squares, with no spaces or overlapping, has that many square units of area.
  • 3.MD.C.6 Find an area by counting how many unit squares cover it, in square centimeters, meters, inches, feet or made-up units.
  • 3.MD.D.8 Solve perimeter problems for polygons: add side lengths, find a missing side, and compare rectangles with equal perimeters but different areas, or the reverse.
  • 3.G.A.2 Divide shapes into parts of equal area and describe each part with a unit fraction, such as 1/6 of the shape.
