Skills Covered

  • Tell equal shares from unequal shares
  • Name halves, thirds, and fourths
  • Split a circle or rectangle into equal shares
  • Describe a share as one half, one third, or one fourth
  • See that two halves, three thirds, or four fourths make a whole
  • Find equal shares that look different

How to Use This Pack

Six pages of early fractions with Thanksgiving pumpkin pies and pans of cornbread. Page 1 sorts equal shares from unequal ones, page 2 counts and names the shares, page 3 cuts a pie or pan so 2, 3, or 4 animal friends get the same amount, page 4 colors one half, one third, two fourths, and more, page 5 has five pie word problems, and page 6 builds whole pies and finds fourths cut in different ways.

In the Classroom

Fold paper circles and rectangles into halves, thirds, and fourths before page 1, so students can feel what "equal" means. Page 3 works well in pairs: one student draws the cuts, the other checks that every share is the same size.

At Home

Cut a real pie, pizza, or sandwich into equal shares with your child and name the pieces. Ask: if we share this with one more person, are the pieces bigger or smaller?

Tips for Success

  • Equal shares are the same size, not just the same number of pieces
  • Halves: 2 equal shares; thirds: 3; fourths: 4
  • On page 3, count the animals first: that is how many shares to make
  • More shares means smaller pieces

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.G.A.3 Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares; describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters
  • 2.G.A.3 Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares; describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths; recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape
