Skills Covered

  • Find area by counting square units
  • Find the area of shapes made of rectangles
  • Compare two areas
  • Draw a shape with a given area
  • Name area in square inches, centimeters, feet, and meters

How to Use This Pack

Five pages that build the idea of area as the number of unit squares that cover a shape. Page 1 counts the squares in rectangles and page 2 in shapes made of rectangles. Page 3 finds two areas and circles the greater one. Page 4 has students draw rectangles, a square, and other shapes with a given area on grid paper. Page 5 gives each shape its own unit, so the area is in square inches, square centimeters, square feet, or square meters.

In the Classroom

Before page 1, cover a book or a desk with sticky notes or paper squares and count them together: that count is the area. Page 4 makes a good partner task, since partners can compare the different rectangles they drew for the same area.

At Home

Count tiles on a floor or squares on a waffle together. Ask your child which of two rugs or placemats would need more squares to cover it.

Tips for Success

  • Mark each square with a dot as you count it
  • For a rectangle, count one row, then count how many rows
  • Squares must cover the shape with no gaps and no overlaps
  • The unit tells the name of the area: square inches, square feet, and so on

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.MD.C.5a Know that a square with 1-unit sides has an area of one square unit and can be used to measure area.
  • 3.MD.C.5b Know that a flat shape exactly covered by some number of unit squares, with no spaces or overlapping, has that many square units of area.
  • 3.MD.C.6 Find an area by counting how many unit squares cover it, in square centimeters, meters, inches, feet or made-up units.
