Features

  • Forms A and B ask the same questions with different numbers
  • Pick the rectangle covered with no gaps and no overlaps, and count unit squares
  • Find an area in square centimeters, square inches or square meters and write the unit
  • Draw a rectangle with a given area on grid paper
  • Find the area of a tiled rectangle and of a rectangle from its side lengths
  • Solve an area story and a story with a missing side
  • Split a rectangle to multiply, and find the area of shapes made of two rectangles
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Area as unit squares with no gaps or overlaps
  • Count square units: square centimeters, square inches, square meters
  • Draw a shape with a given area
  • Tiled rectangles: rows times squares in a row
  • Multiply the length by the width
  • Area stories, and finding a missing side
  • Split a rectangle to multiply (the distributive property)
  • The area of a shape made of two rectangles

How to Use This Pack

The unit test on area. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 11 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Every lesson of the unit is Common Core, so there are no state-only questions. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Question 3 asks for the unit, and the stories (questions 7 and 8) want the answer with its unit: decide before the test whether a missing unit loses the point. Question 4 has many right answers; the key shows one, so check that the rectangle covers the right number of squares. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Find rectangles at home (a placemat, a tile floor, a book cover) and ask how many squares would cover it, then how to find that by multiplying.

Tips for Success

  • Area is measured in square units: say "square centimeters", not "centimeters"
  • Count the rows, count the squares in one row, then multiply
  • For a shape made of rectangles, find each rectangle's area and add
  • Go over the unit review the day before the test
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.B.5 Use the commutative, associative and distributive properties to multiply and divide, such as finding 7 × 8 from 7 × 5 and 7 × 3.
  • 3.MD.C.5a Know that a square with 1-unit sides has an area of one square unit and can be used to measure area.
  • 3.MD.C.5b Know that a flat shape exactly covered by some number of unit squares, with no spaces or overlapping, has that many square units of area.
  • 3.MD.C.6 Find an area by counting how many unit squares cover it, in square centimeters, meters, inches, feet or made-up units.
  • 3.MD.C.7a Tile a rectangle with whole-number sides and show that the number of tiles matches multiplying its length by its width.
  • 3.MD.C.7b Multiply length by width to get the area of whole-number rectangles in story and math problems, and picture products as rectangles.
  • 3.MD.C.7c Use tiles or area models to show that splitting a rectangle's side into two parts splits its area into two products (the distributive property).
  • 3.MD.C.7d Find the area of shapes made of rectangles by splitting them into separate rectangles and adding their areas, including in real problems.

3rd Grade Area Test

The unit test on area in two forms, from covering a shape with unit squares to multiplying side lengths and adding the parts of shapes made of rectangles. Students count square units and name the unit, draw a shape with a given area, multiply rows by squares in a row and length by width, solve area stories and split rectangles to multiply.
