Skills Covered

  • Area as unit squares with no gaps or overlaps
  • Square centimeters, square inches and other units
  • Draw a shape with a given area

  • Area stories, and a missing side
  • Split a rectangle to multiply (the distributive property)
  • The area of a shape made of two rectangles

How to Use This Pack

Eight exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 3rd grade unit on area, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two short questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel. The early tickets count squares; side lengths start with ticket 4.5, and the times sign with ticket 4.4.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. On ticket 4.3 any shape with the right number of squares is right; the key shows one way. Every lesson of this unit is Common Core, so every ticket is for every class. The unit test is a separate pack, and no ticket asks one of its problems.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Find rectangles at home (a placemat, a floor tile, a book) and ask how many squares would cover it, then how to find that by multiplying.

Tips for Success

  • Keep square tiles or grid paper on the tables
  • Say the unit every time: square centimeters, not centimeters
  • Count the rows and the squares in one row, then multiply
  • For a shape made of rectangles, find each part and add
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.B.5 Use the commutative, associative and distributive properties to multiply and divide, such as finding 7 × 8 from 7 × 5 and 7 × 3.
  • 3.MD.C.5a Know that a square with 1-unit sides has an area of one square unit and can be used to measure area.
  • 3.MD.C.5b Know that a flat shape exactly covered by some number of unit squares, with no spaces or overlapping, has that many square units of area.
  • 3.MD.C.6 Find an area by counting how many unit squares cover it, in square centimeters, meters, inches, feet or made-up units.
  • 3.MD.C.7a Tile a rectangle with whole-number sides and show that the number of tiles matches multiplying its length by its width.
  • 3.MD.C.7b Multiply length by width to get the area of whole-number rectangles in story and math problems, and picture products as rectangles.
  • 3.MD.C.7c Use tiles or area models to show that splitting a rectangle's side into two parts splits its area into two products (the distributive property).
  • 3.MD.C.7d Find the area of shapes made of rectangles by splitting them into separate rectangles and adding their areas, including in real problems.

3rd Grade Area Exit Tickets

Exit tickets for every lesson of a unit on area, from covering a shape with unit squares to multiplying side lengths and adding the parts of shapes made of rectangles. Each page holds one ticket four times to cut apart, with questions on counting square units, naming the unit, drawing a shape with an area, tiled rectangles, side lengths, area stories, splitting a rectangle and shapes made of two rectangles.
