Skills Covered

  • Split a shape into two rectangles
  • Find the area of each part
  • Add the parts to find the whole area
  • Use side lengths to find missing lengths
  • Multiply length by width
  • Solve real-world area problems

How to Use This Pack

Five pages on rectilinear shapes: shapes made of two rectangles, like an L or a T. On page 1 the shapes are on a grid with the split already drawn and the two parts shaded differently. Page 2 is on a grid too, but students draw the split line. Page 3 gives side lengths with the split drawn, and page 4 gives side lengths only, so students work out the length of each part. Page 5 has four floor plans and garden plans to solve.

In the Classroom

Cut an L shape from grid paper and let students show two different ways to split it into rectangles. Both ways give the same area, which is a good discussion to have before page 2.

At Home

Sketch a room in your home that is not a plain rectangle and ask your child to split it into rectangles. Count or multiply to find the area of each part.

Tips for Success

  • Any split into two rectangles works; the total is the same
  • Shade or outline each part before you multiply
  • A missing side is the long side minus the short side
  • Add the two areas, then write the square units

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.MD.C.7a Tile a rectangle with whole-number sides and show that the number of tiles matches multiplying its length by its width.
  • 3.MD.C.7b Multiply length by width to get the area of whole-number rectangles in story and math problems, and picture products as rectangles.
  • 3.MD.C.7c Use tiles or area models to show that splitting a rectangle's side into two parts splits its area into two products (the distributive property).
  • 3.MD.C.7d Find the area of shapes made of rectangles by splitting them into separate rectangles and adding their areas, including in real problems.
