Five pages on equal shares, named in words as 2nd grade does. On page 1 students circle equal or not equal for twelve cut shapes: halves, thirds and fourths of circles, squares and rectangles, beside cuts that make shares of different sizes. Page 2 has one share of each shape shaded: students write how many equal shares there are, write one half, one third or one fourth for the shaded share and circle halves, thirds or fourths. On page 3 students draw the lines that cut each shape into halves, thirds or fourths and color one share (a dot marks the middle of each circle). Page 4 shows the same square cut in different ways: students circle the ones cut into halves, then into fourths, decide whether a half cut corner to corner is bigger than a half cut straight down (they are the same size), and show fourths two ways. Page 5 puts shares together into a whole and ends with three share stories.
Fold paper squares and circles before page 1: fold in half and check that the two sides match exactly, then fold again for fourths. For page 4, cut two paper squares in half, one straight across and one corner to corner, and lay a rectangle half on a triangle half: cut and rearrange the pieces to see they cover the same space. Paper plates make good pizzas for page 5.
Share food fairly: cut a sandwich into halves two different ways, a pizza into fourths, a granola bar into thirds. Ask whether each person got the same amount, and how many pieces make the whole thing again.

A 5-page 2nd grade equal shares pack. Decide whether circles, squares, rectangles and a triangle are cut into equal shares, then count the equal shares of a shape, name them halves, thirds or fourths and name the shaded share. Draw lines to cut shapes into halves, thirds and fourths and color one share, find every square cut into halves or fourths when the shares are different shapes, decide whose half of a sandwich is bigger, and show fourths two ways. Finish by putting shares together into a whole and solving share stories about a pizza, a snack bar and a pan of brownies. Every page comes in color and in black and white. Answer keys included.
