How to Use This Pack

Eight lesson plans, one for each lesson of a Kindergarten unit on building and comparing shapes, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the eight lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers, tools and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 35 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching on the rug, 5 minutes together, 10 minutes of practice and an exit ticket you read aloud. Every lesson starts with shapes to hold: pattern blocks, sticks and clay, paper shapes, cans and boxes. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. Lesson 12.8 (building with blocks and counting them) is for the states that teach it in Kindergarten.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson with blocks, boxes, cans and balls from around the house, or straws and play dough for building shapes, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while children work
  • Hold and build shapes first, then pictures, then drawings
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.G.A.1 Use shape names for everyday objects, and tell where things are with position words like over, under, next to and behind.
  • K.G.A.2 Name shapes correctly even when they are turned, tilted, bigger or smaller.
  • K.G.A.3 Tell whether a shape is flat (two-dimensional) or solid (three-dimensional).
  • K.G.B.4 Compare flat and solid shapes of any size or position, using everyday words for their sides, corners and other features.
  • K.G.B.5 Make shapes seen in the world by drawing them or building them from parts such as straws and clay.
  • K.G.B.6 Put small shapes together to make bigger ones, such as joining triangles to make a square.
  • 1.G.A.2 Combine flat shapes (such as trapezoids and half-circles) or solids (such as cubes and cones) into a new shape, then build more shapes from it.

Kindergarten Build and Compare Shapes Lesson Plans

Lesson plans for every lesson of a Kindergarten unit on building and comparing shapes, one page a lesson, with a unit overview that lays the unit out day by day. Each plan has the goal and its "I can" line, what to get ready, the words to use, a 35 minute lesson in five steps (warm up, teach with words to say, try it together, practice, an exit ticket read aloud), questions to ask, the mistakes children make and what to do about them, and ideas for children who need help or are ready for more. Each one ends with the Animal Math worksheets, worksheet makers, tools and quiz for that lesson. Lessons: sides and corners, how shapes are alike and different, which solids roll or stack, building shapes with sticks and clay, drawing shapes on dots, putting shapes together and filling an outline, with building with blocks for the states that teach it.
