How to Use This Pack

Twelve lesson plans, one for each lesson of a Kindergarten unit on money, patterns and the calendar, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the twelve lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers, tools and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 35 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching on the rug, 5 minutes together, 10 minutes of practice and an exit ticket you read aloud. Every lesson in this unit is for the states that teach it in Kindergarten, so teach the ones your state asks for. The parts can come at different times of the year: lessons 13.1 to 13.3 are coins, 13.4 and 13.5 are earning money and needs and wants, 13.6 to 13.8 are patterns, 13.9 is sharing fairly, and 13.10 to 13.12 are the calendar, which fit daily calendar time. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson: sort the coins from a jar, make patterns with socks or snacks, share a snack fairly, and talk about yesterday, today and tomorrow at breakfast. The "Words to use" are the way to talk about it, and the mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while children work
  • Hold real coins, cubes and snacks first, then pictures
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Teach the calendar lessons a little each day at calendar time

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.MD.B.3 Sort objects into named groups, count each group (up to 10), and order the groups by how many they hold.

Kindergarten Money, Patterns and Calendar Lesson Plans

Lesson plans for every lesson of a Kindergarten unit on money, patterns and the calendar, one page a lesson, with a unit overview that lays the unit out day by day. Each plan has the goal and its "I can" line, what to get ready, the words to use, a 35 minute lesson in five steps (warm up, teach with words to say, try it together, practice, an exit ticket read aloud), questions to ask, the mistakes children make and what to do about them, and ideas for children who need help or are ready for more. Each one ends with the Animal Math worksheets, worksheet makers, tools and quiz for that lesson. Lessons: name the coins, heads and tails, what a penny, nickel and dime are worth, earning money, needs and wants, repeating patterns, the part that repeats, growing patterns, sharing fairly, the days of the week, the months and the calendar, and morning, afternoon and night. Every lesson is for the states that teach it in Kindergarten, and the parts can be spread through the year.
