How to Use This Pack

Seven pages for one Kindergarten unit on money, patterns and the calendar. Page 1 is a pre-check (6 questions) to give before the unit, to see what children already know. Pages 2 and 3 are a review to do together before the test, with a tip on every question. Pages 4 and 5 are the unit test, Form A. Pages 6 and 7 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different coins, pictures and days, for a retake or a child who was away. Each form has 12 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Read every question aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the sun. Circle the dime." Questions about pictures name them in the order they are shown, and each picture has its name under it.

In the Classroom

This unit comes from state standards, so leave out what your state does not teach and score out of the questions you give. Questions 1 to 3 are coins: naming them (Georgia, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas), counting one kind with heads and tails (South Carolina, Texas) and what each is worth (Georgia). Questions 4 and 5 (earning money, needs and wants) are Texas lessons. Questions 6 and 7 (repeating patterns and the part that repeats) are taught in Georgia, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Virginia, with Indiana for question 6; question 8 (growing patterns) in Indiana and Oklahoma; question 9 (sharing fairly) in Oklahoma. Questions 10 to 12 are the calendar: days of the week (Indiana, Oklahoma, Virginia), months (Indiana, Virginia) and times of day (Georgia, Indiana, Oklahoma, Virginia). The parts can also be given at different times of the year, as each is taught.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school, or Form B as a check after the unit. Sort the coins from a pocket or a jar into pennies, nickels and dimes, look for patterns on clothes and floors, and talk about yesterday, today and tomorrow at breakfast.

Tips for Success

  • Read every question aloud; children answer by circling, writing one number or drawing
  • Say the picture first: "Find the moon," then the question
  • Hold up real coins: children know them by size and color better than by pictures
  • Say a pattern out loud ("apple, apple, pear") to hear the part that repeats
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.MD.B.3 Sort objects into named groups, count each group (up to 10), and order the groups by how many they hold.

Kindergarten Money, Patterns and Calendar Test

Kindergarten

A unit test for money, patterns and the calendar in Kindergarten, a unit that comes from state standards (Common Core has none of it in Kindergarten), made to be read aloud: a one-page pre-check, a two-page review with a tip on every question, and the unit test in two forms (A and B) that ask the same questions with different coins, pictures and days. Children circle the coin the teacher names, count the pennies, nickels or dimes in a mixed group with heads and tails, write how many cents a penny, a nickel or a dime is worth (two coins a form), pick the way to earn money and the thing we need, circle what comes next in a pattern and the part that repeats, draw the next step of a growing pattern, share things fairly on plates, find tomorrow and yesterday on a week strip, count the Mondays in a month and put the events of a day in order. Every question is a state lesson, so a class can give only the parts its state teaches. A small picture beside each question number lets the teacher say "find the sun." Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question.
