How to Use This Pack

Five pages about needs, wants, and the money that pays for them. Page 1 starts with two short reminders (a need is something you must have to live and be safe; a want is nice to have) and has eight pictures, like food, a home, water, a video game and a lollipop: students circle need or want. On page 2 students cut out ten pictures and glue each one under Needs or Wants; a carrot and a spinning top are already glued as examples. Page 3 explains goods (things you can buy) and services (work someone does for you), and students circle goods or service for shoes, crayons, a haircut, a bus ride and more. On page 4 a child has a few dollars and can buy one of two things: students circle the need, write the money left, and circle Yes or No for whether the want still fits. Page 5 has three children who earned money: each pays for a need first, students write what is left and circle the want there is still money for, then draw a need and a want of their own. The first problem on every page is done as an example.

In the Classroom

Hold up pictures or real things (an apple, a toy, a toothbrush, a sticker) and ask: could you live without it? Sort them into two piles on the floor before page 1. Read the sentences and questions aloud for younger students. For page 4, give each pair a few play dollar bills and two price tags, and let them buy the need first and count what is left.

At Home

At the store, ask your child which things in the cart are needs and which are wants. Talk about how the money a family earns at work pays for needs first, like food and a home, and then for wants. Give your child a few dollars to plan with: what would they buy first?

Tips for Success

  • A need is something you must have to live and be safe: food, water, a home, clothes, medicine
  • A want is nice to have, but you can live without it
  • Food is a need, but a treat like a lollipop is a want
  • Goods are things you can buy and hold; a service is work someone does for you
  • Pay for needs first, then use the money left for wants
