  • Tell which solids roll and which stack
  • Pick the sticks that build a shape
  • Trace and draw shapes on dots
  • Find the two shapes that make a bigger shape
  • Count the pieces that fill an outline
  • Count the blocks in a build

How to Use This Pack

Eight exit tickets, one for each lesson of a Kindergarten unit on building and comparing shapes, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket twice, with room for big Kindergarten writing and drawing: copy the page, cut on the dashed line, and fourteen copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. Read each question aloud: a small picture beside the question number (a sun, a moon) lets you say "Find the sun. How many sides and corners?" Children answer two questions, then circle a face beside the "I can" line, which you read to them.

In the Classroom

Give the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson, at a table with the shapes, sticks or blocks still out. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. Ticket 12.8 (count the blocks in a build) is for the states that teach building with blocks in Kindergarten. On ticket 12.5 any triangle or rectangle drawn on the dots is right, as long as its sides are straight and meet at the corners. The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after building shapes together with straws, toothpicks or blocks. Read the question aloud and let your child touch each side and corner as they count.

Tips for Success

  • Read every question aloud; children circle, write one number or draw
  • Say the picture first: "Find the moon," then the question
  • Name each choice as you point to it, so no child has to read a word
  • Watch for children who count a corner twice when they go around a shape
  • Keep each lesson's tickets to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.G.A.1 Use shape names for everyday objects, and tell where things are with position words like over, under, next to and behind.
  • K.G.A.2 Name shapes correctly even when they are turned, tilted, bigger or smaller.
  • K.G.A.3 Tell whether a shape is flat (two-dimensional) or solid (three-dimensional).
  • K.G.B.4 Compare flat and solid shapes of any size or position, using everyday words for their sides, corners and other features.
  • K.G.B.5 Make shapes seen in the world by drawing them or building them from parts such as straws and clay.
  • K.G.B.6 Put small shapes together to make bigger ones, such as joining triangles to make a square.
  • 1.G.A.2 Combine flat shapes (such as trapezoids and half-circles) or solids (such as cubes and cones) into a new shape, then build more shapes from it.

Kindergarten Build and Compare Shapes Exit Tickets

Kindergarten

Exit tickets for every lesson of a Kindergarten unit on building and comparing shapes, made to be read aloud: one page a lesson, with the same ticket twice to copy and cut apart. Each ticket has two picture questions, answered by circling, writing one number or drawing, and ends with an "I can" line and three faces for children to circle. Children count sides and corners, find the shapes that are alike, tell which solids roll or stack, pick the sticks that make a shape, trace and draw shapes on dots, find the two shapes that make a bigger one and count the pieces that fill an outline. Ticket 12.8 (count the blocks in a build) is for the states that teach it. A small picture beside each question number lets the teacher say "find the sun." Answer keys for every ticket.
