How to Use This Pack

One page to give before the first lesson of the unit on flat and solid shapes, to see what children already know. Read each of its six questions aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the sun. Circle every circle." Children circle every circle, name the shape of a window, circle the sphere, circle the solid shapes, circle the butterfly above the umbrella and circle each closed shape. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. Only the unit's Common Core lessons are asked. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check to a small group at a table before the first lesson, reading one question at a time and waiting until everyone is done. Point to the choices as you name them ("circle, square, triangle"), so no child has to read a word. Then sort the children by what they missed: a child who calls a solid by a flat name needs real blocks and balls in hand in the first lessons. A low score at the start is no surprise; it shows where to begin.

At Home

Use it to see what your child knows before the unit on shapes starts. Read each question aloud, and let your child trace the shapes with a finger.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read every question aloud; children answer by circling
  • Say the picture first: "Find the moon," then the question
  • Name each choice as you point to it, so no child has to read a word
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.G.A.1 Use shape names for everyday objects, and tell where things are with position words like over, under, next to and behind.
  • K.G.A.2 Name shapes correctly even when they are turned, tilted, bigger or smaller.
  • K.G.A.3 Tell whether a shape is flat (two-dimensional) or solid (three-dimensional).
  • K.G.B.4 Compare flat and solid shapes of any size or position, using everyday words for their sides, corners and other features.

Kindergarten Flat and Solid Shapes Pre-Check

A read-aloud check to give before the unit on flat and solid shapes, to see what children already know. Children find circles and closed shapes, name the shape of a window, pick out a sphere and the solid shapes, and find an animal above a thing.
