One page to give before the first lesson of the unit on comparing to 10, to see what children already know. Read each of its five questions aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the sun. Draw lines to match." Children match two rows and circle the row with more, count two groups and circle the one with more, find the two groups that have the same number, circle the greater of two numbers and write >, < or = between two numbers. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check to a small group at a table before the first lesson, reading one question at a time and waiting until everyone is done. Then sort the children by what they missed: a child who picks the longer row without matching needs to line up counters one to one in the first lessons, and one who cannot yet count a group to 10 needs counting practice beside the unit. The signs are new to most children, so a miss there is no surprise; the score shows where to begin.
Use it to see what your child knows before the unit on comparing to 10 starts. Read each question aloud and let your child point and count out loud.
