How to Use This Pack

Eight lesson plans, one for each lesson of a Kindergarten unit on sorting, counting and graphing, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the eight lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 35 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching on the rug, 5 minutes together, 10 minutes of practice and an exit ticket you read aloud. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. Lessons 3.5 to 3.8 (reading and making picture graphs, collecting the answers to a question and reading a T-chart) are for the states that teach them in Kindergarten.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson with toys, socks or snacks to sort, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while children work
  • Sort real things before pictures, and say the rule out loud every time
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.MD.B.3 Sort objects into named groups, count each group (up to 10), and order the groups by how many they hold.
  • 1.MD.C.4 Sort and show data in up to three groups, then answer questions about the total, each group's count, and how groups differ.

Kindergarten Sort, Count and Graph Lesson Plans

Lesson plans for every lesson of a Kindergarten unit on sorting, counting and graphing, one page a lesson, with a unit overview that lays the unit out day by day. Each plan has the goal and its "I can" line, what to get ready, the words to use, a 35 minute lesson in five steps (warm up, teach with words to say, try it together, practice, an exit ticket read aloud), questions to ask, the mistakes children make and what to do about them, and ideas for children who need help or are ready for more. Each one ends with the Animal Math worksheets, worksheet makers and quiz for that lesson. Lessons: sort by one rule, find the one that does not belong, sort and count each group, and find the group with the most, with reading and making picture graphs, collecting the answers to a question and reading a T-chart for the states that teach them.
