Five pages of sorting and classifying with animals. Page 1 has seven animals to connect to where they live: the sky, the water or the land. Page 2 has rows of four with one that is different to circle (a whale and a dolphin look alike, but they are not the same). Page 3 asks how many legs each of nine animals has, 0, 2 or 4. On page 4 students count the frogs, owls and turtles in a scene, color one box on the graph for each, and circle the animal with the most. Page 5 matches each animal to the same animal drawn smaller.
Sort a basket of toy animals on the rug before page 1: which ones fly, which swim, which walk? Ask students to explain why they circled an animal on page 2. Page 4 is a first picture graph: color from the bottom up, one box for each animal.
Sort toys, socks or snacks into groups and talk about the rule: by color, by size, by kind. Count the legs on the family pet, a spider, or a chair.
