Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the same kinds of question as the test
  • Draw a line from each picture to its group and circle the one that does not belong
  • Sort a pile and write how many of each kind, and circle the group with the fewest
  • The last four questions are for the states that teach them in Kindergarten: reading a picture graph, making one with an X for each picture, counting the answers children gave to a question, and reading tally marks in a T-chart
  • A small picture beside each question number, so the teacher can say "find the sun"
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on sorting, counting and graphing, to do together the day before the test. Its 8 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other pictures and numbers, so nothing on the review is on the test. Read every question aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the sun. Is it an animal or a toy?" There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test, at a table. Read a question, let children answer on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Question 4 asks for the group with the fewest, where the test asks for the most: talk about both words. Questions 5 to 8 (reading a picture graph, making one, counting the answers to a question and reading a T-chart) are taught in Kindergarten in some states only: skip the ones your class does not learn. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Read each question aloud and ask your child to say what each picture is before sorting or counting.

Tips for Success

  • Read every question aloud; children answer by circling, drawing a line or an X, or writing one number
  • Say the picture first: "Find the moon," then the question
  • Before a sort, name the pictures together: is it an animal, food or a toy?
  • Have children cross off each picture in a pile as they count it
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.MD.B.3 Sort objects into named groups, count each group (up to 10), and order the groups by how many they hold.
  • 1.MD.C.4 Sort and show data in up to three groups, then answer questions about the total, each group's count, and how groups differ.
