How to Use This Pack

Six pages of comparing groups to 10, with the same number as the star. On page 1 two rows of pictures are drawn the same length, so students draw lines to match them one to one: the row with pictures left over has more, and when every picture has a partner they circle the word same. Page 2 shows a first group in rows of five and two scattered groups; students count and circle the one with the same number. Pages 3, 4 and 5 turn it around: students count a group and draw circles in the box, more on page 3, fewer on page 4 and the same number on page 5. Page 6 puts two groups side by side and students circle more, fewer or same for the first group. Each page starts with a worked example.

In the Classroom

Read every direction aloud and point to the first group as you say it. Before page 1, line up two rows of cubes so one row looks longer, then match them one to one to show which really has more. On pages 3 to 5 there is more than one right answer for more and fewer: let children share their drawings and count them together. Page 6 works well as a talk-about page: say the full sentence, "The bears have more than the bananas."

At Home

Set out a few spoons and forks and match them up: are there more spoons, more forks or the same number? Ask your child to make a pile of buttons with more than yours, then fewer, then the same.

Tips for Success

  • Draw a line from each picture to one partner
  • Pictures with no partner show which group has more
  • Count both groups and say the numbers
  • More than 4 can be 5, 6 or any bigger number
  • The same number can look different when it is spread out
